CSU building at night with festoon lights

Hi, I’m Lily, your CSU President for 2024! With Welcome Week almost here, I wanted to take a moment to chat about something important – drinking. Starting university is such an exciting time, full of new faces, opportunities, and experiences. While it’s great to get involved and enjoy yourself, it’s also crucial to stay mindful of how much you’re drinking to ensure you can fully embrace (and remember) everything.

Here are some of my top tips for making the most of your nights out while staying safe:

1. Pace Yourself and Know Your Limits

For some of you, uni might be the first time you’re trying alcohol, so take it slow. It’s easy to get caught up in the excitement, but pacing yourself is key to making sure you enjoy the night and avoid any regrets. A great tip? Alternate your alcoholic drinks with water, and skip binge drinking altogether. The bar also offers low and non-alcoholic versions of popular drinks, so feel free to mix it up!

2. Eat Before You Head Out

Before you hit the bars, make sure you’ve had a proper meal. Eating helps slow down alcohol absorption and prevents it from hitting you all at once. A full stomach means you’ll be able to enjoy yourself for longer without feeling the effects of alcohol too quickly.

3. Make Your Drinks Last

Really having a great time and meeting lots of new people? No need to rush your drinks! By sipping slowly, you can keep the fun going all night and make the experience last.

4. Stick Together and Stay Alert

While Chester is a safe city, it’s still important to keep an eye on your surroundings and look out for your friends. Drink spiking is rare but can happen, so keep an eye on your drinks and each other. Stick together, and make sure no one’s left behind.
