Society Elections FAQs

All CSU societies are led by an elected committee voted for by their members. Every society must have at least a President & Treasurer elected to stay affiliated with CSU. Below you can find the information you need to know about society elections.

Nominate yourself HERE.

Nominations

Who can nominate themselves?

Any current student who will be an active student for the following academic year.

For example: if you’re a 2nd year student at the time of nomination going into 3rd year or a 3rd year student that is going on to do a masters.

How do I nominate myself for a role?

Complete the society election nomination form.

I’ve changed my mind and no longer want to run, what do I do?

Email studentopps@chester.ac.uk with your details and we can cancel the nomination.

Will I receive training?

Yes! You will be invited to in-person training but if you can’t make that, there will be online training available. Additional training is offered throughout the academic year.

When do committee members start their role?

Students who have been successfully elected to their position will start their role on the 1st August 2026 and be in post until 31st July 2027.

I’m already a committee member; can I nominate myself?

If you’re a current committee member looking to re-run in the elections, you will need to nominate yourself as well. Please note, committee members can only run in one position for a maximum of 2 years.

Campaigning

Can candidates campaign during the election?

If you’re standing for a committee position, your society may offer you opportunities to campaign to members on why they should vote for you.

Do candidates for the society committee positions get a campaigning budget?

No, unfortunately CSU won’t provide any funds for committee election campaigns. As campaigns are done internally within the society, we suggest using social media and/or digital tools to campaign if you want to.

Voting

How do I vote?

You will get emails inviting you to vote on the CSU website. If you do not receive any emails, please email csumarketing@chester.ac.uk to opt in.

I’m a candidate in the elections, can I vote?

Absolutely! You can vote for yourself and for the other candidates. You are also encouraged to vote in the CSU elections too!

How many votes does our society need?

Societies need a minimum of 20% + 1 of their members to vote for their committee to meet quorum (for the election to stand). For example:

If your society has 20 members, you need at least 5 members to vote.
