Hey everyone!

It’s me again, Lily, your CSU President for 24/25. This time I am back with my top tips for starting university!

I imagine at this point that your emotions are getting overwhelming, with nervousness and worry at what the next chapter of your life will look like – but it’s not time to stress! University is a time where most people find their home and their purpose. This next part of your life is exciting because of the uncertainty: it’s a time for you to take full control of your life.

Hopefully some of the tips and tricks I offer can help to make the transition smother, and help you navigate this crazy journey!

So, what are my top tips for starting your university life off right?

1 – Only pack the essentials! Student accommodation isn’t always the biggest, and you’ll run out of storage really quickly. Pack what you need, and you can buy things along the way if you need anything else. Remember, you will probably go back home to visit so you will need belongings there too.

2 – It’s okay to miss home. Let yourself get upset and miss home life – it’s normal and makes us all human! Make sure you keep in contact with loved ones and pack something that reminds you of home life. I would recommend sticking some photos up if you can, and stay in touch with friends from back home.

3 – Say YES! Take advantage of every opportunity that comes your way, as you don’t know what it could lead to. Don’t do something that makes you uncomfortable in a bad way, but make the most of what’s on offer. Take on the challenges and step out of your comfort zone!

4 – Set a budget. Plan out a weekly and monthly budget and be reasonable with what you buy. Consider the funds you’ll need for entertainment, socialising, rent/bills, necessities, and food, and keep track of where your money is going. Money is tight as a student, but you’ll be much better off if you have a budget to plan your spending.

5 – Manage your workload. Being organised and planning your time effectively will be your saving grace while at university. Get your revision done and hit your deadlines but don’t be afraid to apply for an extension if it is needed.

Those are just a quick round-up of some the key pointers I would recommend thinking about. Don’t feel like you need to stick to these, as university is something everyone will navigate differently. You’ll find your feet when you get there and settle in!
