The UK is currently facing a Cost of Living crisis, which is affecting everyone, including students. NUS have published a report with their findings on the biggest issues to come out of their Cost of Living survey, which can be found here. With these objectives in mind, I attended an NUS conference centred around Cost of Living to find out what steps other Student Unions were taking and how we could work together on a national campaign and in the North-West.
Using this data, and specifically the North-West data, I began my Cost of Living Campaign with a focus on the following objectives:
- Access to hot food and drinks
- Access to warmth and hot water
- Tackling period poverty by offering free and accessible period products
- Raising awareness of clauses within all-inclusive rent contracts which may have a cost allowance per tenant, meaning you may be charged extra if you go over the allotted allowance
I’ve also been doing research into what our University is doing to help, and the ways we’re already ahead of the curve on the support we offer for students. These provisions include:
- The Digital Inclusion Fund for students who require support with technology in order to properly access their course
- The International Financial Emergency Fund, which offers support to international students
- Free printer credits of 500 pages per student
- The offer of fully catered accommodation/meal schemes
- Having a student money advisor available to students, and access to Blackbullion courses
I then created a presentation about this and presented it to key stakeholders within the University. After proposing some ideas surrounding facilities, catering, finance and more, the University shared their ideas and highlighted areas where we can work together to improve student life in Chester.
Using these ideas, I incorporated them into my campaign and the University publicised their plans under the Your Money brand. There has been a working group set up around Cost of Living too, which is co-chaired by myself and the Domestic Bursar, Ian White, which will tackle anything we’ve missed from our priorities. To let us know what you’re worried about with Cost of Living, fill out our survey before it closes on Sunday 16th October using this link.
Using the data we collect from this survey, we’ll be writing to our local councillors and MPs with the University, to highlight the issues faced by University of Chester students about the Cost of Living.
We’ve also launched a new SU initiative, 🍞TOAST TUESDAYS🍞! This is where we offer FREE toast every Tuesday between 8:30am and 10:00 am in the SU space on Exton Park. We have a range of bread available (including Gluten Free), a range of spreads (including butter, vegan spread, jam and Biscoff), and a free hot drink too! We encourage you to bring your own reusable cup too, and have hot chocolate, coffee, and tea up for grabs, alongside milk and milk alternatives. Hopefully we’ll see you there soon!👋
