Hello everyone, Summer here, your VP Student Life! Hope you are all well! These updates will be coming to you every month from one of the Officer team this year, so keep an eye out for them.
July has been filled with a LOT of learning, as over this past month I have been busy completing training, learning the ropes, and making sure we’re ready to go when students are back on campus in September. At the time of publishing, I will be at the NUS Lead and Change with my fellow Officers at the University of Birmingham, meeting other Officers from SUs around the country, and learning how I can best empower the students I represent.
Last week, CSU Staff and Officers completed an intense two-day training course to become a Mental Health First Aider. We learned a lot about how we can best help those who might need some mental health support, and we all now have knowledge about various mental health conditions that we may not have had before! Thank you to Jamie Morris, our instructor (and CSU CEO!) for facilitating this.
We’ve all been meeting a bunch of University departments in order to get to know them better and figure out how we can work together this year. I met with Student Services and Hayley from the AU to chat about Disability and Inclusion in sport, and Disability Awareness Month plans. I met with Maria from Residential Life to talk about how we can make living on campus a more exciting time, with events and community building activities. I’ve also been working with the Sustainability team to convince the Council and University to offer a bike hire scheme between Chester campuses. All of the Officers met with the Chaplaincy team for lunch and learnt about what they do, and how we can work together. Gill Reeve, the Senior University Chaplain, even gave us a tour of student spaces and the Chaplaincy garden. The cheese and onion toasties we had there were DELICIOUS. Thanks, team!

I’ve also hosted an open day and a Residential Information event to represent CSU to potential new students joining us in 2026. Everyone seemed excited by our societies, which was great to see, and I loved speaking to everybody who came over to say hi.
Last weekend, we held a really cool event for our Birkenhead students, with a bouncy castle, live music and traditional fairground games (and yummy free pizza for lunch, of course). I had a blast with the rest of the Officer team!
Speaking of lunch, the Officers visited the Business School’s International Student Picnic at Queens Park at the beginning of the month, where we got to taste some new yummy foods and chat to some international students about their time at university!
It’s not just all delicious lunches – I’ve also started to work on my manifesto, including planning how monthly spotlights will look, making sure student loneliness is a priority by pitching different types of events, and making sure students will all be aware of the support they’re entitled to by urging University departments to advertise their services clearly. I’ve also attended the Equality Forum and made sure our Student Council Officers have the chance to get involved with that going forward, too.
Planning for CSU’s Welcome Week is well underway, and there’s loads of exciting things coming up, so keep your eyes peeled on socials for updates!
