President and Chair of the Trustee Board, Lauren Friel, highlights the need for change and expresses optimism for a brighter future
Chester Students’ Union has taken a decisive step towards reinvigorating its organisation and delivering an exceptional experience for its members with the initiation of a comprehensive year-long programme of change. Recognising the need to address concerns about their performance, the Union has embarked on a transformative journey in collaboration with the University of Chester, NUS, Coole Insight, and Greenhouse. The objective is to establish a vibrant and inclusive Students’ Union that effectively represents the voice of its members, fosters community building, and ensures accessible academic advice.
President Lauren Friel and the Chair of the Trustee Board emphasise the importance of this change programme and their dedication to forging a better future for all members. Lauren expressed her commitment, stating, “We firmly believe that this programme of change is a crucial step in creating a stronger and more dynamic organisation for our valued members. By working closely with the University of Chester and our esteemed partners, we have embarked on a journey to excellence. Our ultimate goal is to build a Students’ Union that truly represents our members, fosters a sense of community, and provides vital academic support when it’s needed the most.”
The decision to initiate this ambitious programme came after a thorough health assessment and the subsequent establishment of a road map in collaboration with the University of Chester, NUS, Coole Insight, and Greenhouse. The comprehensive Health Assessment and Road Map were delivered in March 2023, prompting the Trustee Board to take the necessary steps to create the change programme.
Crucially, the University Council, its Planning and Resource Committee, and the Strategic Executive Team of the University have provided unwavering support and endorsement for the Union’s pathway to transformation. The backing from these influential entities underlines the shared commitment to foster positive change and empower the Students’ Union to reach its full potential.
To ensure the successful execution of this change programme, a dedicated Turnaround Board has been established by the Trustee Board. Endowed with special powers, the Turnaround Board will directly contribute to the enhancement of the Students’ Union. Overseeing the programme from May 2023 to April 2024, the Turnaround Board will work in collaboration with all stakeholders to drive meaningful improvements.
In a promising move, the Trustee Board has also appointed Scott Farmer as the Change Director. With extensive experience as a senior consultant in the Students’ Union sector, Farmer brings valuable expertise to facilitate the positive transformation of the organisation. His role will involve close collaboration with all key stakeholders to implement the necessary changes and drive the Students’ Union towards excellence.
Pro Vice-Chancellor Student Experience Dr Helen Galbraith said “As part of the University’s “Citizen Student” Strategy, we want to empower our students to shape their own education and experience. Having an active and vibrant Students’ Union is crucial to this. I am very grateful to Scott Farmer and to the CSU officers who have been working hard to develop and implement an ambitious change programme. I and my senior colleagues are fully committed to supporting the CSU on this journey.”
As the year-long programme of change gets underway, Chester Students’ Union and its members eagerly anticipate the positive outcomes that will emerge from this concerted effort. With the support of the University of Chester, NUS, Coole Insight, Greenhouse, the Trustee Board, and the appointed Change Director, Scott Farmer, the Students’ Union is poised to create an environment that truly caters to the needs and aspirations of its members, fostering a stronger sense of community, representation, and academic support.
