Group of students dancing with powder paint outside

South Asian Heritage Month, running from 18th July to 17th August, is a time to celebrate the rich and diverse cultures of South Asia. At Chester Students’ Union, we are proud to run a range of South Asian societies including the Indian Society, Bangladeshi Society, Nepalese Society, and Pakistan Society. These groups are essential not only in allowing students to have a home away from home, but also to educate other students into their rich culture, celebrating together and making new connections.

Earlier this March, our Indian Society hosted an incredibly bright Holi event, bringing the vibrant spirit of the ancient festival to Chester. Holi, known as the “Festival of Colours,” is a joyous celebration that has been observed by Hindus in the Indian subcontinent for centuries. With roots tracing back to the 4th century, Holi marks the arrival of spring, symbolising the triumph of good over evil.

The event saw nearly 100 students coming together to dance, sing, and drench each other in powder paint. One student said “Since we are all far from home, events like Holi, much celebrated in India, give us a sense of belonging here. It’s also fun to see people of other cultures enjoying our traditional festivals.”

We encourage everyone to join us in learning more about these vibrant cultures. Whether you’re a member of one of our South Asian societies, or simply interested in exploring new traditions, there’s something for everyone this month.
