Black History Month is a time to celebrate and honour the achievements, contributions, and influence of Black individuals throughout history. It’s an opportunity to recognise and pay tribute to those who have broken through barriers, inspired change, and left their mark on their respective fields. The theme of this year is Saluting our Sisters, so our elected officers have chosen to spotlight three extraordinary Black women who have made significant contributions in the worlds of entertainment and sports. These remarkable women have not only broken boundaries but also paved the way for future generations, leaving a legacy of empowerment.
Tom’s Choice: Freema Agyeman
Freema Agyeman’s role as Martha Jones, the first Black companion on Doctor Who, marked a pivotal moment in the Sci-Fi world. Her character provided representation and inspiration for viewers like me who hadn’t seen many BAME actresses in TV before. While her arrival faced backlash, she made a huge impact in showing the importance of diversity in television, and paved the way for more inclusive casting in the world of Sci-Fi.
Jack’s Choice: Serena Williams
Serena Williams is the greatest female tennis player and arguably the greatest tennis player of all time. She won 23 grand slam titles during her career, 3 more than Roger Federer. As a black woman, Serena has been inspirational to generations of people looking to get into tennis and has proved the importance of diversity and inclusion, not just in sport, but in all walks of life.
Ellie’s Choice: Tessa Sanderson
Tessa Sanderson, a former British javelin thrower and heptathlete, was the first black British woman to win Olympic Gold (1984, Los Angeles). She competed in every Olympic Games from 1976 to 1996, as well as achieving great Commonwealth success, setting national records, and receiving MBE and CBE honours. She later became a sports reporter for Sky News and founded the Tessa Sanderson Foundation and Academy, inspiring young people and individuals with disabilities to participate in sports. Her remarkable sports career, as well as her commitment in encouraging community engagement, is the reason I have chosen to showcase her.
