Following several concerns raised to us by students about the use of AI-generated imagery and posters (‘AI slop’) across the University, CSU wanted to recognise the strength of feeling expressed and to thank those of you that raised this with us.
We particularly understand and support the concerns you have expressed about the threat of AI-generated content replacing the unique creativity of our talented student community.
We want to reassure you that we are actively discussing this with the University.
This situation has also prompted a much wider discussion about the responsible use of AI across the University community. CSU has been working behind the scenes on understanding the University’s use of AI alongside its commitment to sustainability, how the use of AI is consistently embedded in institutional policies, and how third-party organisations working with the University utilise AI e.g. Turnitin. Internally, we are also reviewing our own partnerships, policies, and processes to ensure they align with your views.
There are important conversations to be had here about the role AI plays within university life, and we believe you should be a part of those conversations. Therefore, we will be providing opportunities and platforms for you to voice your ideas, concerns, and opinions directly to the people who can influence change. We will share more information about how you can get involved with this soon, but this is just the start of the conversation, so please keep sharing your views.
Finally, we have been made aware of reports that students have been asked to remove social media posts relating to these legitimate concerns by university staff, and we will be looking into these reports further.
As always, we would like to thank you for sharing your concerns and standing up for what matters to you. We will continue to champion your voice and encourage change where it is needed.
