Hello everyone! Adedayo here, your VP Education for 24/25. As we approach those first assignment deadlines, I am here to support and guide you, ensuring that you are well-prepared for your academic journey, whether it’s helping you navigate academic challenges, providing resources, or amplifying your voice. To help you navigate your assignments while avoiding academic integrity issues, I’ve put together some handy tips and reminders!
1. Understand what Academic Misconduct is
The first step is understanding what misconduct actually is. Academic misconduct can include plagiarism, collusion, cheating in exams, and faking data or sources. Familiarise yourself with Chester’s academic integrity policies (which can be found on Portal) and the specific rules related to your course, which your lecturers will share with you. Knowing what is expected of you will help you avoid unintentional violations.
2. Always cite your sources
Properly citing your sources is crucial to avoiding plagiarism claims. Whenever you use someone else’s ideas, words, or research, you must cite them in-text and in your reference list. This includes direct quotes, paraphrased ideas, and even concepts that have influenced your answers. Use the style required by your modules (usually found in your module handbook on Moodle; it’s normally APA 7th or MHRA), and Cite Them Right (also linked on Moodle) to help you format them.
3. Use plagiarism detection tools
Some courses provide access to TurnItIn’s plaigarism detector, which your lecturers should have spoken to you about. There are other plagarism detector tools out there, including Chrome Extensions for Google Docs. These tools can help you identify any unintentional plagiarism in your work and allow you to make corrections before your final submission. Remember, it’s better to catch and fix these issues yourself than to have them pointed out by your module leader.
4. Manage your time effectively
Poor time management is a common cause of academic misconduct. When students are under pressure to meet deadlines due to procrastination, work shifts or having too many assignments due at once, they may be tempted to cut corners. To avoid this, start your assignments early, break them into manageable tasks, and create a realistic schedule that allows you to complete your work without rushing. This will give you enough time to research, write, and check your work properly again. Give yourself more time than you think you’ll need, just in case.

5. Seek help when needed
If you are struggling with an assignment, speak up! The university offers various support, via the Academic Skills (ASk) team, LIS helpdesk, your lecturers and module leaders, your PAT, and the library staff, who can all provide guidance on how to approach your work. Additionally, if you are unsure about how to cite sources or interpret assignment guidelines, ask your module leader or lecturer, or check Cite Them Right for clarification. Seeking help early can prevent last-minute panic and reduce the risk of academic misconduct.
6. Be honest during exams
Cheating in exams is a serious violation of academic integrity. To avoid this, ensure you’re fully prepared for your exams by studying in advance and only using the approved materials. During the exam, follow all instructions carefully, avoid any unauthorised aids, and refrain from communicating with other students. Remember, the consequences of being caught cheating can be far more damaging than a poor grade.
