Hi guys, Adedayo here!
As an international student myself, I thought I would put together a few tips for any new international students starting their academic journey at the University of Chester which really helped me when I started.
Read on and get in touch if you have any questions!
Familiarise yourself with Chester 📍
Make sure to explore the local area you’re based in, whether it’s at Chester, Birkenhead, or Warrington. Either way, Chester itself is a lovely city and is worth a visit. Take a stroll and get to know the environment.
Get registered 🖊
Make sure to register with a local GP/Doctors’ surgery for healthcare services, set up a UK bank account for easy financial transactions, apply for a National Insurance (NI) number, and get a new UK sim for your phone.
Join a society 🤗
So that you don’t feel lonely, join a society that aligns with your community where you can network and meet with new people. There are plenty of cultural, faith-based, or interest-based societies to choose from, which can be found here: Societies
Seek help and support 💭
There is always someone available to help, you just need to speak up. It’s very likely that someone at University will be able to answer most queries you have, if you know where to look! From Student Services, to Accommodation, to your PAT, to the CSU advice service – there are so many helpful options.
Comply with visa and immigration rules ✅
Ensure you fully understand the limitations of your visa to avoid any mishaps.
Prepare for the weather ☔
The weather in the UK can be very unpredictable. Get your winter jacket, hoodies, and umbrella handy.
Finally, have fun! Enjoy this experience fully and don’t work too hard. Enjoy life!
Adedayo ✌
