Hi everyone, my name is Tom Scott, and I am the elected Vice President of Student Life for 2023/24. My role within Chester Student’s Union is to look after the societies and work closely with the support departments around student life at the university such as accommodation, student experience, student services, catering, the bar, and the athletics union.
After starting my new role at the end of June, I have been busy over the summer with training in my handover period, going to a well-being farm in Edgeworth where the other officers and I met Jim Dickinson from Wonke, the NUS conference in Leeds, networking with other student Unions with Coole Insight in Keele and getting prepared for Welcome Week. I have had meetings with some of the heads of departments to ensure that you have an enjoyable time at the University of Chester and to put across some of the points in my manifesto.
So far, I’ve had wins in pushing for societies and sports to have CONSENT training building on the work of our previous VP Student Life, promoting our new discount card, and getting students back on campus.
I’ve hoped that you’ve enjoyed this week so far, I certainly have. It feels so good to have the University of Chester vibe again on campus. So far, I have helped with moving-in day, movie night watching Shrek, the welcome day at Warrington, the sports and societies fair, the tropical party and the quiz, karaoke, and Bazza Bingo hosted by the entertaining Lady Wanda. I’ve been so impressed with the number of students engaging with our events. When I started in 2020, this was missing due to the COVID-19 pandemic. So, I’m so happy that our new and returning students are having a great experience.
I’m really looking forward to seeing what happens at our welcome fair and a heavily anticipated return of SU Fridays this week. I’m also working with the campaigns team on campaigns on renting/housing awareness, access for Disability Sports, Equality between different sports and societies (time & funding), and reviving Wellbeing Week. I’m looking forward to all of the society events this year and watching (or playing) the occasional Wednesday and Sunday fixtures for the Athletics Union sports teams.
Feel free to ask me any questions about anything around student life as I want to make your experience at Chester the best it can possibly be. Be VOCAL!
See you soon!
Tom
