Woman standing with arms out by finish line

Hi everyone,

I thought it would be a good idea to pop on here and properly introduce myself for those of you who don’t already know me – I’m Ellie, your elected SU President for the 2023/2024 academic year!

Over summer I’ve attended lots of training sessions to help enhance my skills and be the best elected officer (and university governor!) that I can be! I have done lots of work on the manifesto points that I was elected in on, working out how to put all my ideas into action and have started to prioritise items, achieve some great wins, and start to get my aims ticked off the list!

Although it’s been a great summer here on campus, now that a lot more students are here I’m really looking forward to getting to know you all more and find out what it is that you really want from your student experience and time here at Chester. I’m going to be out and about around campus a lot this week, as it’s Welcome Week, and we have so many events going on for everyone to join in with. Whether you are a brand new student experiencing the University of Chester for the first time, or are returning after the summer, I would love everyone to get involved in the events this week to make your start to the year an amazing one!

My time at university started off quite unconventionally as my first year was in 2020, during Covid, so it wasn’t like the university experience you see today. However, as things started to get back to normal and we could socialise more, I joined in with extra-curricular activities and my whole experience of university changed for the better! The sports and societies fair which is taking place today (Wednesday 20th September) is a great place to work out what you want to do in your spare time when you’re not in lectures or doing uni work. It gives you the opportunity to speak to committee members and sign up to taster sessions which run during the next 2 weeks. My one piece of advice is try as much or as little as you want – just because you go to lots of taster sessions doesn’t mean you have to continue with all of those activities. However, it may mean that you meet some new friends in that 1 or 2 hour session who you wouldn’t have otherwise met! I made some of my best friends by joining in with extra-curricular activities and it’s a great way to relax away from academic work.

There is another fair this week, the Welcome Fair (Friday), which is full of organisations and businesses from around the city and is a great way to find out what Chester, outside the university setting, can offer to you – plus they give out lots of freebies! In between these events we still have lots going on, such as live music, crafternoon events and quizzes.

If you take anything away from this post, I hope it’s the message that this week is a week of fun, and I can’t wait to be there and experience it too! I’m also in the office throughout the week, continuing with my plans for the year, so if you have anything you want to see during your time at uni, please come and speak to me if you see me, and tell me your ideas!

Overall I can’t wait for the year to come, and Welcome Week finally marks the beginning of it!

Throughout the year I will be giving you regular updates about what I’m getting up to and any wins that I get for you as the students, so keep an eye out for them. I’ll let you know about them on here, as a blog post, but also on my President Instagram @csupresident so please go and follow that to keep up to date with what I’m doing day-to-day as well.

See you soon! Ellie
