Yellow background with black text which reads "Decolonising The University - Big win update"

Cast your mind back to October 2020, when CSU ran a month-long timetable of events to celebrate Black History Month. One of the events we held was a ‘Decolonising the Curriculum’ panel, of staff and students from the University, chaired by Oge from Minds of POC. The event was the highest attended event of the whole month… testament to the imminent changes that were happening across the University.

Following the event, Eleanor spent time putting together a report, based on research and what was said and recommended by the panellists. There was a page long list of recommendations that was shared with the Pro Vice-Chancellor Student Experience, Dr Helen Galbraith, in her first months in the role. The report was met with great enthusiasm and has been shared with relevant departments across the University.

We are pleased to say, as a result of the report and the recommendations, the University has responded with an action plan to address every. Single. Recommendation. Truly outstanding. This is still only the start of the conversation, and I am excited to see where this agenda moves in the future, ensuring decolonisation is a concept thought of in every aspect of University life no matter how big or how small.

Thank you to every student for their hard work and input on this work, especially the BAME Representative, Arfana Ali, who was a key driving force behind the creation of the University’s Race Advocates.

Let’s keep this conversation open and fight for every student at the University of Chester.
