What is the difference between Sex and Gender?
Sex refers to the set of biological attributes in humans, based on their anatomy and hormones, whereas Gender is a social construction that relates to the behaviour, attitudes, and identities of males, females, and gender diverse people.
Pronouns
A pronoun is a noun that refers to an individual in place of using their name in the third person. In the English language, the most commonly used pronouns (he/she) are those that specifically refer to an individual’s gender. Remember, gender is deeply personal, and it is always ok to ask someone how they would like to be referred to.
Let’s look at the most common pronouns, but bear in mind this is not an exhaustive list and there are many options available:
| He“He walked” | Him“I watched him” | His“His car” | His“That is his” | Himself“He likes himself” |
| She“She walked” | Her“I watched her” | Her“Her car” | Hers“That is hers” | Herself“She likes herself” |
| They“They walked” | Them“I watched them” | Their“Their car” | Theirs“That is theirs” | Themselves“They like themselves” |
| Ze (zee)“Ze walked” | Hir (heer)“I watched hir” | Hir“Hir car” | Hirs“That is hirs” | Hirself“Ze likes hirself” |
FAQ’s
What if I get it wrong?
That’s absolutely fine, everybody makes mistakes sometimes! If you are alone, apologise immediately and use the correct pronoun. If you are in front of other people, it may be better to wait until later and apologise in private as to not draw any extra attention.
Why is it important to know and use someone’s pronouns?
It is not always possible to know someone’s pronoun simply by looking at them, so by asking and understanding the correct pronouns to use, you are showing respect and compassion for an individual’s gender identity. If someone is referred to differently, it may cause upset and make them feel disrespected.
What can I do to be inclusive of everyone’s pronouns?
Learning about this is your first step in the right direction. If you want to go further, you can list the pronouns that you would like for yourself on emails or introduce yourself with your pronouns. Finally, ask someone how they would like to be addressed and referred to.
