Firstly, I am Dale Tromans, your Postgraduate Students’ Representative and Chair of Student Council for 2020/21 here at Chester SU. I am a third year PhD student in the Department of Geography and International Development researching recent (12,000 years ago to Present) rapid climate change events in Montenegro.

This term has seen me achieve some of my targets set out in my manifesto from the spring. Initially, I campaigned for a ‘fees holiday’ of three months for Postgraduate research students which involved me liaising with the SU President and Vice Chancellor. This was successfully granted in May and I am hoping that this will ease the pressures on current research students.

Additionally, I now reside on three postgraduate committees: Postgraduate Taught Forum, Postgraduate Research Forum and Postgraduate sub-committee. The two forums meet every three months for informal discussions with senior members of SET (Strategic Executive Team) and colleagues from Faculties and Support departments across the University’s campuses. This is an opportunity for me to raise postgraduate issues that need addressing either in the short term or more long term and pressing issues which can be addressed at Postgraduate sub-committee.

Furthermore, I have set up the first Postgraduate student representative forum which meets monthly consisting of Faculty Postgraduate Reps, the CSU President and the VP Education. This is pivotal for moving forward and getting the postgraduate students’ voice heard, issues raised here are mentioned at Postgraduate sub-committee and SET in order to help improve and enhance the Postgraduate student experience.

Finally, looking ahead to 2021 and the second term, my plans revolve around creating more of a Postgraduate community and enhancing the experience of all postgraduate students. I hope to achieve this through the development of seminars led by Postgraduate research students’ which Postgraduate taught and undergraduate students can attend to learn more about being a research student and undertaking research as a whole. This will be done in conjunction with the Academic Quality and Standards (AQS) department. In addition, I will be looking to develop the Postgraduate reps forum to ensure all postgraduate students can have their voice heard.

I am always available to all Postgraduate students for either a virtual or face-to-face meeting and will do my best to continue working for you to enhance and improve the Postgraduate community here at the University of Chester.
