Promote your society

Looking to expand your society's membership? Want to make a lasting impression? We are here to help!

We've compiled our top marketing tips to help you thrive, whether it's boosting engagement on your social media profiles or advertising your society events.

Whenever you need advice or assistance in promoting anything, just reach out to our communications team at csumarketing@chester.ac.uk.

Website

The first thing you should do is ensure your society's description is up to date on the website. This is the first place students will visit when they are interested in learning about your society, and it is where students will go to purchase a membership.

Double-check that your contact details are correct and that you have updated your meeting times, so students know how to get in touch with you and understand how often you meet.

You should also strive to make your page stand out and capture the reader's attention, so feel free to show some personality and get creative!

If you wish to modify your society description, please contact studentopps@chester.ac.uk or csumarketing@chester.ac.uk.

Social Media

Harness the power of social media to promote your society yourself!

Did you know that 97% of our students use social media, with 84% using Instagram daily?

Many of our students will go to social media to have a look at what your society can offer them. It is a great way for you to post updates on your society from recent events or changes to your committee. It is also a great way to engage your members and create meaningful relationships, and it offers the opportunity to get input on important matters through polls.

We have seen that some of our societies introduce their committee members on Instagram, allowing students to familiarise themselves with the faces behind the society. It is important to signpost students to the website to become an official member, and some of our societies pin a post that explains this in more detail.

Graphics

There are plenty of online tools that can help you make graphics for social media or posters for free. One of our favourites to use is Canva.

Feel free to use CSU’s logo on your graphics to advertise your society or events, but ensure that your event has been approved by CSU before advertising it. When creating graphics, we kindly ask that you do not use the University logo, and instead use CSU’s.

Other Channels

Despite what you may believe, posters are still effective! Currently, societies can print posters at our office and leave them in the CSU building. However, always seek permission before placing them elsewhere across campus, and be mindful of wasteful printing practices.

If you are an academic society, try reaching out to your lecturers as they might be able to support your society's promotion by incorporating slides into their sessions.

Our Top Tips

  • Don’t use offensive language or post about excessive drinking/smoking/illegal behaviours.
  • Understand the tone of voice of your society. Is it casual, fun, or educational?
  • Be consistent with your posting frequency. Instagram stories are great for quick updates; try to use them frequently.
  • Avoid using graphics that are overloaded with too much text as they can be hard to read.
  • Respond to comments to build relationships with your audience and show your friendliness.
  • Tag the officers and CSU in your posts so we can re-share them for you!
  • Be vigilant about spelling errors.
  • Remember, event tickets must be on sale via our website, so contact CSU first before you advertise your events!
